The incident occurred on Monday morning when an IED placed beneath a vehicle exploded, resulting in the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.

Sarvarov served as the head of the armed forces' operational training department.

The committee mentioned that one theory under investigation points to the possible involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. So far, Ukraine has offered no public response.

Officials have been sent to the site, which is reportedly in a southern district of the capital.

Media coverage state the detonation took place in a vehicle lot adjacent to a residential building.

Series of Targeted Attacks

Since the beginning of the extensive conflict in Ukraine, a string of Russian military commanders have been attacked within Moscow.

This new event comes after other high-profile incidents, for instance:

  • General Yaroslav Moskalik was died in a automobile blast in Moscow earlier this year.
  • General Igor Kirillov died in late 2024 when a device placed on a scooter was detonated remotely.

While a Ukrainian source previously linked Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such allegations are not officially confirmed as a matter of official stance.

The war has increasingly seen covert operations reaching into the streets of the Russian capital.

The examination into General Sarvarov's death is still underway.
