Illegal dumpers bury countryside in massive pile of rubbish

The site has been described as an "environmental crisis".
Correspondent surveyed the scene and said the heap appeared to be "six meters tall at least".

Waste criminals have dumped a huge quantity of garbage in a open space in Oxfordshire.

The "ecological disaster unfolding in public view" is around 150m (490ft) long and 6m (20ft) tall.

The huge pile has materialized in a field adjacent to the River Cherwell near Kidlington.

Parliament representative raised the issue in parliament, saying it was "threatening an environmental disaster".

Conservation group reported the unlawful garbage pile was established around a month ago by an illegal operation.

"This is an ecological disaster unfolding in public view.

"Every day that goes by elevates the risk of hazardous drainage reaching the river system, contaminating wildlife and endangering the wellbeing of the complete river basin.

"Regulatory bodies must take action immediately, not in months or years, which is their usual response period."

Access ban had been put in place by the Environment Agency.

It is challenging to identify any individual items of waste as it appears to have been pulverized with soil mixed in.

Part of the waste from the peak of the heap has collapsed and is now only five feet from the stream.

The River Cherwell is a tributary of the River Thames, which signifies it travels through Oxford before joining the Thames.

Elected official stated the expense of disposing of the garbage would be substantial

The official petitioned the government for assistance to clear the illegal site before it caused a fire or was carried into the river system.

Addressing parliament members on recently, he stated: "Illegal operators have deposited a massive amount of unauthorized plastic waste... amounting to hundreds of tonnes, in my electoral area on a water-adjacent land alongside the River Cherwell.

"Stream volumes are growing and heatmaps indicate that the garbage is also warming, raising the risk of fire.

"Environmental authorities reported it has limited capabilities for enforcement, that the estimated cost of disposal is larger than the complete twelve-month budget of the local district council."

Government official stated the government had assumed responsibility for a failing recycling sector that had resulted in an "growing issue of illegal waste disposal".

She informed MPs the agency had implemented a restriction order to stop more access to the location.

In a statement, the authority confirmed it was examining the incident and appealed for evidence.

It commented: "We share the public's frustration about situations like this, which is why we intervene against those culpable for illegal dumping."

A newly released study determined efforts to tackle major waste crime have been "severely neglected" even though the issue developing into larger and more sophisticated.

A parliamentary committee suggested an autonomous "comprehensive" investigation into how "widespread" waste crime is dealt with.
