New Year Revelers Advised to Dress Warmly with Wintry Weather Expected Throughout the UK
Weather experts are reporting an icy start to the new year, with snow likely across much of the UK. Revelers have been told to bundle up as near-freezing temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.
Celebratory Events Proceed In Spite of Warnings
Edinburgh's iconic Hogmanay celebrations are set to proceed, a contrast to last year's postponement. This comes despite yellow warnings for snow in northern Scotland.
"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so extra layers will be needed," noted the Met Office.
Displays Under Mostly Clear but Frosty Skies
Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is likely to be perfect for fireworks shows, with a lack of precipitation and clear skies. Temperatures are due to be low, meaning additional clothing vital, according to forecasters.
Further north, skies will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for watching fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.
Widespread Weather Alerts for New Year's Day
Moving into Friday, advisories have been issued across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.

- People have been urged to allow extra time for travel on the road.
- Delays and cancellations are anticipated on public transport.
Readings Forecast to Plummet Further
With the start of 2026, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are forecast to fall even more as wintry showers and strong winds are expected to affect the north of the country.
Approximately 10cm of snow is forecast to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.
Public Health Alerts Released
In addition, amber-level health advisories have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with temperatures expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.
The health agency said this meant the weather could to cause notable consequences across medical and care provision. This includes a expected uptick in the number of deaths among vulnerable individuals or those in the older age groups.
