The City of Seattle's LGBTQ+ Pride Will Go Ahead for World Cup Despite Formal Protests from Iran and Egypt

Plans for LGBTQ+ rights celebrations in Seattle during the upcoming World Cup are proceeding unabated, even after Iranian and Egyptian soccer associations raised strong concerns regarding a scheduled “Pride Match.”

Stadium Policy Alongside External Festivities

Local organizers stated clearly they are “proceeding as planned” with Pride activities outside the stadium. These events will take place around the Group G fixture between Egypt and Iran on June 26th. Additionally, FIFA has a policy allowing Pride flags to be brought into the match venue.

“As the local organising committee, SeattleFWC26’s primary task is to prepare our city to welcome visitors for the matches and oversee the fan activities outside of the match venue,” stated the vice-president of communications.

Cultural Background Behind the Objections

Homosexuality is illegal under Iranian law, and in Egypt, public decency statutes are frequently employed to target and prosecute LGBTQ+ people. Egypt's football association stated it refused to be linked to events that “fundamentally oppose the cultural, religious and social values … in Arab and Islamic societies.” In a parallel move, the head of Iran's soccer body also raised “its opposition against the issue.”

The Governing Body's Position on Symbols

The international federation holds full authority of stadiums during games. Although it prohibits political signage with political messages, it allows flags expressing “social and sporting symbols,” which explicitly includes the rainbow flag. This regulation was in effect at the most recent tournament in Qatar and was reinforced following reports of authorities confiscating flags.

  • The Pride Match concept was devised to highlight Seattle’s longstanding tradition of championing inclusion and equality.
  • An artistic competition has been commissioned to create images celebrating the occasion.
  • Organizers have pledged to ensuring all fans are welcomed in the city during the tournament.

The Pacific Northwest hosts one of the nation’s largest communities of Iranian descent, a thriving Egyptian expatriate community, and rich communities from every competing country. “We’re committed is to guaranteeing everyone experience the warmth, respect and dignity that characterizes our part of the country,” organizers added.
